When a 32-year-old winger stood proudly on the field singing the Indian national anthem, it grabbed the attention of fans worldwide. The player is Ryan Williams, but why is this such a big deal?
Ryan is now officially an Indian international footballer. He represents Bengaluru FC in the Indian Super League and finally made his debut for India on March 31, 2026. This exciting moment occurred during the AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers. He made an immediate impact, scoring a goal in his very first match for the country.
The game was played at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Kochi against Hong Kong. It was the final match of the qualifying campaign. Qualification was already out of reach because Singapore topped the group. Still, India won the match 2-1. Williams scored in the 4th minute of the game. This is the fastest goal by an Indian on debut. This was the very first win of the team in the campaign.
Williams chose India because of his deep family roots. His mother comes from an Anglo-Indian family in Mumbai. His maternal grandfather, Lincoln Grostate, played for Bombay in the Santosh Trophy. Williams described this switch as a “full circle moment” for his family. His twin brother, Aryn Williams, also played for NEROCA FC in the I-League between 2017 and 2019.
“One of the things my grandfather, who passed away, said was, ‘Please go and play in India.’ … It’s something that my family and I thought about a lot.” He also stated, “Honoured to make official what’s long felt true. Grateful for the love, the opportunity, and the sense of belonging this country has given me. … India, I’m one of your own!” He noted.

What Ryan Williams Means for Indian Football
The entire legal process took over a year to complete. He previously earned one senior cap for Australia back in 2019 against South Korea. FIFA officially approved his switch on November 19, 2025. He is only the second foreign-born player to have taken Indian citizenship and to have represented the senior team. Izumi Arata was the first in 2012. His citizenship was held at the Bengaluru FC training facility. Sunil Chhetri personally presented him with the documents.
The Indian national squad has struggled with attacking depth for decades. Ryan’s years in European and Australian leagues will definitely raise the team level. His debut performance serves as clear proof of his value.
As the captain of Bengaluru FC, he knows how to lead a team. This experience is great for the younger players in the squad. He was already familiar with several Indian players when he arrived.
Ryan Williams is not just a new player on the roster. He represents a total shift in Indian football’s mindset and possibilities. From Australia to India, his journey is now part of Indian football history!
