A historic record stood within touching distance for one of cricket’s most reliable batters. A career spanning two decades then ended abruptly without a single farewell match. Questions are still asked about how Shivnarine Chanderpaul’s final days in West Indies cricket truly ended.

Chanderpaul is undoubtedly one of the greatest batters in West Indies history. He retired with 11,867 runs in 164 Tests at an average of 51.37. He scored 30 centuries and remains the most-capped West Indies Test player of all time. These stats place him second on the all-time West Indies run-scorers list, right behind Brian Lara’s 11,953 runs.

This brings up a debated detail. Chanderpaul was exactly 86 runs short of surpassing Lara’s legendary record.  In 2014, he was in strong touch, scoring 465 runs at an average of 116.25. However, he experienced a sharp dip during the 2015 home series against England.

He managed just 92 runs in 3 Tests, averaging 15.33. The selectors, led by Clive Lloyd, cited a “rapid decline” as their primary reason for action. They noted his average had dropped to around 16 over his last 11 innings and stated a need to look toward youth.

This led to a major turning point in his career. He was dropped in May 2015 and never recalled to the national squad. By December of that same year, he was quietly removed from the central contract list.

Through all of this, Chanderpaul stood his ground. He publicly insisted he was not retired and remained available to play for Guyana. In January 2016, at age 41, he finally announced his official retirement. However, he only did this to obtain a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the board to play in a T20 league. He later described this condition as “blackmail,” stating he was forced into retirement just to get the clearance.

This messy exit sparked a massive conspiracy theory among fans, often called the “rum shop theory.” It claims the board deliberately dropped him to prevent an Indo-Guyanese player from breaking Lara’s record. Lara is famously an Afro-Caribbean icon from Trinidad.

However, it is important to clarify that no direct evidence exists to prove this theory. He was dropped after one bad series despite excellent prior form, forced out via an NOC clause, and denied a farewell match.

While the conspiracy theory remains debated, the way the board handled a 21-year veteran points to a harsh reality.

A Pattern of Disrespect? The Wider Issue Beyond Conspiracy

Brian Lara himself was highly critical of how Chanderpaul was treated. Lara called the board’s actions “despicable” and “distasteful.”

Lara publicly argued that Chanderpaul deserved at least a couple of farewell Tests. The West Indies Players’ Association also slammed the decision.

In a later interview, Chanderpaul stated that he felt “totally disrespected” by the selectors. He felt his years of service were ignored in the rush to push him out.

Furthermore, he continued to play domestic and franchise cricket with great success. In the 2017 English county season, he scored 831 runs at 59.35 for Lancashire, suggesting his exit was definitely premature.

Whether or not the conspiracy theory is true, the handling of Chanderpaul’s exit remains highly controversial.
