Vaibhav Sooryavanshi turned 15 yesterday, March 27, 2026. This simple birthday means the generational talent is now fully cleared to play for the senior Indian national team.
The left-handed opening batter from Bihar has been a prodigy since his early teens. He holds the record for being the youngest Indian to score a List A century at just 12 years old. He made his first-class debut in January 2024.
Despite his massive achievements, he could not play for the senior Indian team. This was due to the ICC Minimum Age Policy. The rule was introduced in November 2020 and took effect immediately. A player must be at least 15 years old on the date of the tournament’s first match to play any form of international cricket.
The ICC created this rule to protect the physical and mental well-being of young players. It aims to reduce the risks of burnout and injury from early exposure to high-pressure cricket and international travel. It also prevents the exploitation of minors. Exemptions are incredibly rare and were never pursued for Vaibhav.
Before 2020, there was no global minimum age. Extreme debuts were allowed. Pakistan’s Hasan Raza debuted in Tests at 14 years and 227 days in 1996, making him the youngest male international ever.
Sachin Tendulkar debuted for India at 16 years and 205 days. But the 2020 rule changed everything. The rule also blocked associate players. Jersey’s Nia Greig made her senior debut at 11 years and 40 days, and Romania’s Marian Gherasim debuted in men’s T20Is at 14 years and 16 days. Both were barred from playing again until they turned 15.
The Future Path of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi
Vaibhav’s chances of playing for the senior team are very high in the short term. The ICC age barrier is finally gone. A strong showing in the 2026 IPL will put him directly on the selectors’ radar.
If his IPL season goes well, he could debut in T20Is or ODIs by mid-2026. India often plays bilateral series against opportunistic opponents like Ireland, Zimbabwe, or Afghanistan during this time. His U-19 success and List A records make him a perfect fit.
However, selectors will be cautious. They want to avoid player burnout. Past prodigies like Prithvi Shaw faced early hype but struggled later on. Vaibhav might get more domestic red-ball time to build consistency. A Test debut will likely wait until 2027 or later. Long-term, he is viewed as a cornerstone for the 2028 T20 Olympics.
The BCCI also has other related rules. Since 2016, players can only play in one U-19 World Cup to broaden the talent pool. This policy previously limited players like Washington Sundar. Because of this, Vaibhav cannot play in 2028 or 2030, despite his age.
Also, from IPL 2026 onward, U-19 and U-16 players must play at least one first-class match to be IPL-eligible. This was a direct response to young talents like him entering the league early.
