Bhuvneshwar Kumar

Milestones don’t always arrive with drama. On April 5, Bhuvneshwar Kumar added a historic chapter to his IPL career.

Bhuvi became the first fast bowler to reach 200 wickets in the Indian Premier League. He is only the second bowler overall to hit this mark, sitting right behind Yuzvendra Chahal. He achieved this during the Royal Challengers Bengaluru match against the Chennai Super Kings.

The historic 200th wicket came early in the second innings by dismissing Ayush Mhatre. Bhuvi finished his 4 overs with figures of 3 for 41. CSK were eventually bowled out for 207 runs.

He reacted to the milestone in his usual calm manner. However, Virat Kohli gave him a warm hug and encouraged him to celebrate.

After the game, Bhuvneshwar focused completely on the team. He noted the varying bounce and tough conditions. “We stuck to our basics. The ground was very heavy. I was cramping as well, and was trying to keep the plan simple,” he said. He praised the team’s preparation and also highlighted Tim David’s 70 not out off 25 balls. He made no direct comment about his 200-wicket milestone.

This game marked his 192nd IPL appearance at the age of 36. He joins Chahal, who holds 224 wickets, at the top of the charts. He is now the second-highest wicket-taker overall.

As we look past the immediate excitement of the match, it is important to see where he stands in the IPL history.

What This Milestone Means for Bhuvi’s IPL Legacy

Bhuvneshwar Kumar now sits in second place with 200 wickets. Spinners Sunil Narine and Piyush Chawla follow with 193 and 192 wickets. When looking at fast bowlers, Jasprit Bumrah and Dwayne Bravo are tied next at 183 wickets. This makes him the clear first pacer to cross the 200 mark.

He also holds the record for the most powerplay wickets in IPL history with 71. His overall economy rate is around 7.6, which proves that bowlers do not need extreme pace to win games.

He made his IPL debut in 2011 with the Pune Warriors India. He later played for Sunrisers Hyderabad and Royal Challengers Bengaluru. His peak came in 2017 with 26 wickets in a single season.

Taking 200 wickets in a batter-friendly league is massive. Many see him as an underrated yet highly consistent performer.
