Dewald Brevis

A season can slip away quickly in the IPL. Sometimes, one return can change the complete scenario for a team. For CSK, that hope now rests on Dewald Brevis.

Dewald Brevis is fully fit and back in full training with the Chennai Super Kings. Express Sports reported that he was seen in the official CSK kit during recent net sessions. The 22-year-old missed the first 3 matches of the season due to a side strain during the team’s pre-season training camp.

Head coach Stephen Fleming confirmed the injury and the rehab phase. After the recent loss to RCB, Fleming said they hope to have him ready for the next game. He noted that the five-day break was a good time to get him fully prepared. Fleming also clearly stated that Brevis was a “big loss” for the team.

Earlier in the week, he only took part in light drills and separate net sessions. A side strain usually takes two to three weeks to heal. Earlier in the year, CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan called him a “future star” but noted the injury would keep him out early on.

Brevis is expected to be available for the upcoming match against the Delhi Capitals on April 11. He will likely take a spot in the middle order, batting anywhere from number four to six. This is the one of the main areas where CSK has struggled the most.

CSK has had a very poor start to the IPL 2026 season. They have zero wins in their first three matches and sit at the bottom of the points table.

The team clearly needs a spark to save their season before it is too late. The answer to their massive batting problems might just be walking back into the dressing room right now.

Why Dewald Brevis Could Be the Missing Piece in CSK’s Lineup

Brevis proved his worth during his IPL 2025 performance. He joined CSK as a replacement player for ₹2.2 crore. In just 6 innings, he scored 225 runs with an average of 37.50. His strike rate was the highest among all CSK middle-order batters last year.

His overall numbers in IPL and T20 cricket show his value. In his IPL career, he has scored 455 runs in 16 matches. He holds an average of 28.44 and a strike rate of 153.20. In his T20 career, he has 1,787 runs in 81 matches. His strike rate sits around 163. He is widely nicknamed “Baby AB”. His return will support the experienced core, including MS Dhoni, who is also nearing his own return.

The three losses in 2026 clearly show a lack of middle-order performance. These are the same issues seen in IPL 2025 when CSK finished in 10th place. Without Brevis, the team loses a key attacking option during tough phases of the game.

The question now is not just about his comeback, but whether it comes soon enough to revive CSK’s season.
